I don't know what is doing but I know I don't want it.

@annika i've been using plex for years and liked it, but i'm considering switching away if they pull more fuckery

@ilovecomputers @libc @annika you can try #jellyfin open source and looks a lot like plex

@annika uhoh what's going on? I haven't heard yet

@aaronpk I just feel like I hit walls at every turn. I was just prompted to pay $4.99 so I could play media from my local network on my tablet. They're targeting a niche that's Not Me.

@annika as like an in-app purchase? Yeah that's a tough problem, they need revenue somehow, and I'd rather pay them than have them sell ads to me. I bought the lifetime pass several years ago and I haven't been bothered with prompts since then.

@aaronpk Oof, wish I had known about the lifetime pass. I spent $180 on monthly passes before canceling.

I don't mind paying for stuff but Plex is just so far beyond what I need. I have media files on a server, I want to stream them to a few devices. I don't want to sign in and have all these other extras.

@annika yeah it's definitely a lot. One of my favorite features is that it can download files to my iPad so I can watch while offline, which is great when I'm on planes. I feel like this all got harder to do with mobile devices, it used to be pretty straightforward using just computers.

@annika I know a few people who’ve switched away to Olaris. Still seems a little rough to me, but I’ve got it bookmarked in case I ever decide to bug out from Plex.
