post offices should have reverse economies of scale. sending one letter should be free and sending ten thousand letters should cost a million dollars
@clarity I can see a million ways this could backfire, even as I agree the cost of postage needs to decline
@FinalOverdrive less worried about the cost of postage and more worried about all the fucking trash coming thru my mail slot every week
@clarity That's what I have my shredder for
@clarity train fares too, now that you mention it. you and your stuff? we're going that way anyway. ten cars of cars? here's where to send the wire transfer.
@clarity As far as I can tell this is…kinda complicated.
I used to work for a junk mail, ahem, direct mail company. Half the clients were nonprofits sending heart-rending pleas for more cash. The others were pharmas reminding patients to take their meds. Everything was morally grey.
Commercial mailers get bulk rates. But they also cost even less to process, so at the end of the day, they might be subsidizing that holiday card you addressed by hand
@neilk yeah but on the other hand, I'm watching an anime where a character talks about how postmen carry people's hopes and dreams in their letters and thinking about how. no they fucking don't, they carry advertisements.
@clarity And bills!
@clarity would love this. We receive mail for previous residents of our house from the same senders, no matter how often we write "moved left no address" on the envelope!
@scouten yeah, pretty much
@clarity especially if it's coupons or some ad. I don't want your bullshit
This will make some upset but that is a sacrifice I am willing to make
