‘If your solution to some problem relies on “If everyone would just…” then you do not have a solution. Everyone is not going to just. At no time in the history of the universe has everyone just, and they’re not going to start now.’

@scruss I often struggle with ways to convey this. A lot of political discussions go here, and I think there's a reason for elected governments to 'nudge' people to do what many say they 'just should'.
@DarcMoughty @scruss governments incentivize behavior all the time through a variety of means! Every tax deduction, grant, fine, etc. is such an incentive (or disincentive, as the case may be).
@scruss This! The ozone hole didn’t get fixed by “everybody just not buying things with CFC in them”. It was a concerted effort and yes, regulation!
@JensHannemann @scruss a fact which SHOULD be self-evident after everybody didn’t just wear masks to try and slow the spread of a global pandemic of a serious respiratory illness.
@scruss if everyone would just stop using the bike / bus lane as a parking space I would be able to achieve enlightenment
@scruss in general the word “just” in prescriptive statements is a huge red flag and often indicates that the speaker isn’t taking into account the reality that the other person(s) live in.
@thinkling I know. I try very hard not to use it
I agree. I wrote something against the bozos who come around saying if you don't like some open source software, you can "just fork it."

@scruss Actually there have been many cases where humans just everyone just.

We need to gather small groups of trusted people around us, and plan strategies that will effectively help, even when the vast majority or people are indifferent, brainwashed, or just too busy fighting for their own short-term survival.
@scruss except for that one summer where everyone just played Pokémon Go
@brent I didn't. I only know one person who did
@scruss very nicely formulated.
@oscherler not my quote: it's the anonymous tumblr writer's words
