If you're also giving Bluesky a try, I'm over there, too. Come say hi.

bsky.app/profile/fraying.bsky.

I crosspost sometimes, but I'm finding it interesting to see what's different about here vs there. I feel like I can be more real here, esp in followers-only posts. There seems more newsy because of all the journalists and quote posts. And honestly? Fewer reply guys there.

(Please don't have here vs there arguments in my comments. Loyalty is for friends, not social networks.)

Bluesky SocialDerek from Milk Barn Farm (@fraying.bsky.social)I used to make websites. I wrote “Design for Community.” I designed the original Blogger. I created JPG Magazine, Fray, Kvetch, Cute-Fight, and more. Now I grow flowers and turn them into CBD products at https://milkbarn.farm.

So far, my biggest complaint about Bluesky is how everyone says it's great because it "has no algorithm" which is a bananas thing to say because it has thousands of algorithms called Feeds that you can choose from.

And before anyone here gets preachy because Masto has "no algos," yes, it does, it's just called Explore.

Algos aren't the problem and never have been. Loss of control is the problem.

Don't get me started.

Tool-wise, being able to edit posts here is hard to give up. I genuinely cannot post without typos anymore.

But being able to limit who can reply to a post (even after posting) over there is brilliant and much needed here.

As an old community designer, these differences still fascinate me.

Getting an asshole reply here to this incredibly noncontroversial thread is the reason why I’m spending more time on Bluesky lately.

@fraying also, reverse chronological *is* an algorithm too

its algorithms all the way down!

@fraying I SO DESPERATELY want them to allow editing there. Argh.

@fraying really solid thread, and reflects my feelings on Bluesky Vs Mastodon.

Not sure how long i can keep up with looking at two apps... It we'll see.

@fraying also didn't mean to use "Vs", as it's not really a competition, and I see them as becoming very different things.

@hazz223 I getcha and I agree! I want MORE places so they can all experiment with different approaches. The idea that we need one place with everyone in it is the crux of the problem!

@fraying I wonder if that’s their anti-asshole algorithm.

@ryan Asshole comments do tend to beget more asshole comments.

@curiouskiwi yeah it’s a real subjective experience.

@curiouskiwi though I do think the stronger block there keeps people polite (or invisible).

@fraying I kinda have the same feeling. BS feels like more news, politics, current events, reactions , influencers etc. I can deal with it in smaller doses. Masto feels more homey and safe and the people more 'real'. I am looking forward to solutions coming out that let you bring these views together.

@fraying Frankly, I find that to be an either misunderstood, dishonest or stupid take.

Algorithms promoting harmful content & enforcing harmful habits are ABSOLUTELY the problem - this is extremely well-documented & you should both know that, and also know that this is what everybody means when they talk about algos.

We're well into "guns don't kill people" territory with this logic & I sincerely hope you'll read what you wrote & think about it a bit more thoroughly.

@jwcph «algorithms» is a generic term and absolutely everything a computer does involves algorithms. We should try to defend the precision of language against careless people.

Now, if you say “unethical engagement-optimising algorithms” are problematic I suppose we might find ourselves in agreement. Accusing OP of dishonesty or stupidity for using words how they were meant to be used.. is not a way to convince anyone here.
