Pretty pleased I managed to have this entire conversation with @lsanger on Twitter using only my own website and tools! Never had to visit Twitter or use any Twitter apps! Our #indieweb tools have come a long way! #ownyourdata

“It’s about doing the one little thing you can do, even if it’s useless: planting seeds in the midst of the apocalypse, spitting on a wildfire, bailing out the ocean with a bucket. Individual action is almost always pointless. Hope and strength comes from our bonds with each other, from the actions we take as a community, holding hands in the dark.” festive.ninja/one-atom-of-just

we spent years doing all these weird tricks to have drop shadows in web pages only to get them built-in yet now have this decade of flat design. smdh.

oh oh reminder!

if you're in the #SanFrancisco / #BayArea area on Wed, January 9th, 2019; then you'll be able to see me talk about the #Fediverse and the #IndieWeb and aim to pull people in at wafflejs.com/!

Pull up if you can and let me know :)

Are we doing personal websites again because I never shut mine down so I'm accidentally way ahead on this trend.

Social groups, and therefore the Internet, go through cycles of localization and centralization.

We were localized (personal sites), we centralized (social media), and we are starting to localize again (slack channels, blogs).

occasionally, clicking through yet another half-arsed GDPR-mandated cookie management screen, i find myself thinking "the GDPR has buggered up the web"

then i catch myself.

no, it hasn't. the way companies have opted to respond to the GDPR is what's buggered up the web. they could have been nice and unobtrusive about it, but no, they decided that *every user in the EU* should suffer their protests at not being able to stow thousands of fragments of random shite on a whim all over their vict- sorry, users' computers.

I am told that switching your tumblr to a custom domain will make the Oath interstitial and the image flagging go away. so I made tumblelog.xyz/ to make this easy. Thing is , I don't have any flagged images on my tumblr, so I can't test this theory

A very nice Christmas Homebrew Website Club in London this eve.

Blog posts were written, h-feeds were unmunged, replies were sent, ideas were discussed and mince pies were consumed.

Back in the New Year!

Since we didn't get very many women, enbies, or people of color to submit talks, the folks choosing talks for the Decentralisation & Internet Privacy track at FOSSDEM 19 decided that we'd like to ask of you:

If you submitted a talk, go ask an underrepresented minority friend/acquaintance of yours if they'd like to give the talk with you/in your stead.

CC @fosdem, can we get a little boost 💜?

the second funniest part about the Pagliacci joke is that the doctor is abysmal. Imagine seeing this dude:

YOU: I have depression

DOCTOR: I dunno, go see a fuckin clown or something

“Values are built into social software and spread through the networks of people who join. This is why most of these sites are so tech-centric. Because social software is all about the collective, the early values often get reinforced on the entrance page.” danah.org/papers/BlogTalksRelo

honestly though, mastodon instances are run and moderated by real people who care about the network, to the point of often paying their own money out-of-pocket to run their instances.

the *one* time i've had to report a post, my instance admin messaged me directly to let me know the action taken about it.

don't be shy to report. it works here. the rules aren't there just to keep things advertiser-friendly.

welcome to mastodon. don't be a dick. hug your local mods/admins.
