Hey everyone! So the first call of the Social Web Incubator Community Group is at 4PM GMT this Friday, May 5th. I hope you can make it!

w3.org/community/swicg/2017/05

This will be a somewhat loose call, going over topics of the group and the state of things.

Call details posted on the blogpost. Quick link to find call time in your timezone: worldtimebuddy.com/?qm=1&lid=6

@lambadalambda except instance populations will be power law distributed, and the problems for the tummlers are worse at scale

hang on, do replies not show in the public timeline? Is this a birdism?

@maiyannah you can make PubSubHubbub simpler too by not using fat pings and checking with the origin URL.

@maiyannah right, that is the insight behind webmention that makes it so much simpler than salmon.

@sina when bradfitz was inventing webfinger he built a finger daemon first

@xj9 relmeauth would be even better (and much easier)

Mastodon, Twitter and publics

Long ago, I wrote about the theory of social sites, with the then-young Twitter as the exemplar. As Mastodon, GnuSocial and other federated sites have caught some attention recently, I thought I'd revisit these theories.

@maiyannah sounds like a classic memcached use case, cache it, and flush cache (or Regen in background) when an update comes in

@maiyannah on unmung.com/mastoview I just cache the json from last good one it found, and that loads fast
